Cadbury Fudge

This bar of Cadbury Fudge was another item included in the Christmas selection pack I received as a gift.  

Without being overly harsh, this was another children’s product that, historically, I’m not a fan of – give me a tub of Heroes and I’ll leave the Fudge ones for someone else. However, I thought it would be rude not to give it another chance, and at least I knew it wouldn’t be as frustratingly chewy as the Chomp! 

The ‘fudge covered with milk chocolate (24%)’ bar was quite narrow and cylindrical in shape and came in a distinctive orange wrapper with pale blue text. Inside, the fudge itself appeared to be two-tone, with the upper half being a bit darker and smoother than the fluffier bottom section. I did wonder if this was just the way I had cut the bar, though, although I did still find its colour was a lot paler than I had remembered it. 

The chocolate emitted a sweet, milky smell but didn’t do much to impact the taste buds. However, I don’t mean this as a criticism, since the fudge itself was far nicer than I remembered it! It wasn’t the best I’ve ever had but it had a very sweet taste, with a hint of vanilla, and I genuinely ended up enjoying it. 

I can’t deny its sugariness, particularly when combined with its slightly grainy texture, but it was also soft and, whilst slightly chewy, it didn’t take ages to swallow. However, I wouldn’t recommend sucking the fudge as it had a tendency to stick to the roof of the mouth and almost cause choking! 

I was pleasantly surprised by this Cadbury Fudge and I think it’s safe to say I’ll no longer be sharing my Heroes.

Cadbury Chomp

This Cadbury Chomp was another product included in the Christmas selection pack I got last year. I can’t say I was a huge fan of the product name since I hate noisy eating, but I guess this was aimed at kids rather than adults, anyway! 

The bar came in a child-friendly red wrapper with yellow writing and I did like how the letter ‘C’ was made to look like a mouth about to take a bite. I was a bit bemused at the point of this bar, though, having read the product description and realised it was word-for-word the same as the Cadbury Curlywurly – this time, the ‘milk chocolate with a caramel centre’ simply consisted of 70% caramel instead of 69%! 

What this bar did prove, though, was how much of a difference shape can make. It may have smelt and looked the same (inwardly) as the Curlywurly, but the flat rectangular design (with no holes!) meant it was far easier to allow the textured chocolate to melt and, therefore, leave behind the caramel. This was ever-so-slightly rough to suck on but, on the whole, it was smooth. It did get thinner and thinner but I don’t really have much patience with caramel so I tended to give up and chew to finish it off.  

I had thought the caramel felt a bit more stringy to cut through than the Curlywurly had but the difference was far greater in the mouth. It was ridiculously chewy, really, with each mouthful seeming to take forever to swallow! However, the buttery and fairly deep sugary taste from the caramel (and the standard chocolate taste) seemed to taste the same so this change seemed purely down to having a greater quantity of caramel in the mouth at once (the bar itself was larger too, of course). This increase in size also meant the caramel tasted stronger in the back of the throat which, again, was something I didn’t enjoy as much. 

As with the Curlywurly, I didn’t love this Chomp bar, but that was mainly due to my preference of non-chewy products. It certainly wasn’t disgusting – just not something I’d choose.

Cadbury Dairy Milk: Buttons

These Fairtrade Cadbury Dairy Milk: Buttons were another product included in the selection pack I received at Christmas. It was actually this brand that taught me to count since, when I was a toddler, I would get to count out 10 Buttons after nursery as a treat to go with my lunch! 

 

These Buttons came in a kid-friendly purple bag that featured a monkey with chocolate buttons for eyes. They were made with the standard Dairy Milk chocolate that contained 23% milk solids, 20% cocoa solids, and had a creamy chocolate smell and taste. 

The Buttons had a similar appearance to the Milk chocolate buttons in my Thorntons The Snowman and the Snowdog: Christmas selection box – they were the same shape and depth and were also slightly scuffed. However, in this case, I did like the addition of the Cadbury logo being imprinted on the base of each button. 

Despite only being small, these chocolate pieces provided a thick melt, and I love chewing on a few at a time to release a full chocolatey flavour. It was just a shame there weren’t more in the bag!

Cadbury Curlywurly

This treatsize Cadbury Curlywurly was part of a Mondelez Christmas selection pack I received as part of a gift last year. I’m not really a big fan of chewy bars like this but they’re ok and I certainly wouldn’t let one go to waste! 

Simply described as ‘milk chocolate with caramel centre (69%)’, the Curlywurly came in its usual but uniquely designed white wrapper with its name being written in colourful writing. Its shape, as well, was something a bit different since it was a long, flat and holey bar. Unfortunately, mine was a bit bashed, but I tried not to hold that against it too much! 

Unfortunately, this product was coated in standard Cadbury chocolate rather than Dairy Milk, and so only contained a minimum of 14% milk solids. The chocolate did have quite a strong scent, though, and I did wish there had been more of it! 

The stiff caramel centre looked smooth and was a good colour. Despite being extremely chewy, it was soft too, so it was a bit like chewing gum once it had been worked on a little bit. Its sugariness did result in a slightly rough surface texture but I did like how the chocolate quickly mixed into the overall experience. On the downside, the thinness of the chocolate combined with the thickness of the caramel, meant that the bar didn’t melt very well as an alternative method of consumption. 

The caramel was very much the main feature of this sweet bar – the chocolate was fine but nothing to write home about. Together, the bar was never going to be the most amazing thing in the world, but I have to admit that my lack of excitement over it was more down to my personal taste rather than specific problems with the product. I don’t mind chewiness, here and there, but I much prefer it if there’s a contrasting texture alongside it. Still, this was a good bar for children and, with so few calories, for dieters too!
